When you're studying ancient history trivia in particular, it is referring to a particular period throughout human history. Ancient history comprises one of the largest sections of the human past, largely because it is difficult to study in much detail the events of this period. This is due largely to the decay of written records and the lack of actual proof for many of the theorized events of the time.

An Ancient history quiz can begin as early as the dawn of recorded history. This is generally considered to be about 5000 years ago. Approximately 3000 BC is when the first Sumerian writings date to, and this is the general start of ancient times. The only period which could be considered to comprise a longer part of human record would be pre-history, which is used to lump together all the events prior to the start of Sumerian writing, about which almost nothing is known.

There is a subsection of this period of time of which most of the questions on a history quiz will be about. These are the periods of Greek and Roman history, about which much more is known than the events leading up to those times. The rise of scholarship in both Greece and Rome ensured that we have much more complete records from those periods.

The Greek history periods begins in approximately 776 BC, and the Roman Empire springs into being only a few decades later. The end the material that would be covered by an ancient history quiz is generally considered to be around the late fourth century BC, when the Roman Empire finally fell.

This is of course only referring to an ancient history quiz focusing on Europe. Students of history often also address this period in China and the east as well as in Africa. The dates of history in these areas are marked by different events.

Returning to western history, there are many important historical figures and leaders that are associated with this time. The earliest ancient history is marked by people like Confucius and Siddhartha Gautama, the originator of Buddhism. The later part of ancient history was largely characterized by figures such as Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. The most important historical figure in ancient history, Jesus Christ, is also born near the end of that period. The next period of history is known as the common era, which went up until the fall of Rome.
